Heterologous expression of Sporobolomyces PCS1 in S. cerevisiae increases its resistance to cadmium. The PCS1 cDNA was expressed in a vector allowing induction in response to galactose. Wild type and the yap1 mutant strain were transformed with this plasmid or the empty control and cultured overnight in YNB with either glucose or galactose as the carbon source. Ten-fold serial dilutions were plated onto YPD medium with or without cadmium sulfate and cultured 2 d at 30°C.
